Even the long lost Mayan Civilization influenced the world, with its' calendar that ended (supposedly) on 2012 inspiring many movies about its' end and what it meant, which was usually the end of the world.Brave New World occurs six hundred years in the future. In the modern world, nearly every culture has been impacted by one or more other cultures.
While most people picture an American to be a "White Caucasian Protestant", many people who are of other races ( African, Asian, Native American or etc.) and religions (Catholic, Islamic, Hinduism, or etc.) identify themselves as American and live a similar lifestyle, but they still retain part of their ancestors' culture through things like traditions and attire. Sometimes a culture can be very diverse. The United States is often referred to as a "melting pot" because many different people immigrated to the US. Culture can include a peoples' language, religion, race, customs, history, poltical beliefs, and more.
It's an external conflict because of instances in both societies occur where John is attacking or being attacked by society, one such scene is when John attempted to murder Pope with a knife.Īccording to OxfordDictionaries, Culture is "the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." Basically culture is a certain group of peoples' way of life. It's an internal conflict because he often fights against himself, like the whipping, because he doesn't accept who he is. The fact that John is an outcast in both societies, the reservation and world state, and that he struggles with the conflicting beliefs between the two is both an internal and external conflict. John help drives the plot of the story by causing conflict, like he did when he threw the soma out of the window, angering the crowd and causing a riot.
John also ends up whipping Lenina when she arrives. He tries very hard deal with the reality of the "Brave New World" yet he inevitably goes insane and hangs himself.
John is struggling with the way of life in the new world and his mother's death in chapter 14 sends him spiraling down a path to madness. This is shown while he's at the lighthouse, when he whips himself.
